one bad day in Ar. was better than 100 good days in Ca.

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

Bubba went to a psychiatrist. "Doc," he said,"I've got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there's somebody under it. I'm gong crazy!" "Just put yourself into my hands for one year," said the shrink."Come talk to me three times a week, and we should be able to get rid of those fears." "How much do yu charge?" Eighty dollars per visit", replied the doctor. "I'll sleep on it," said Bubba. Six months later the doctor met Bubba on the street. "Why didn't you ever come to see about those fears yu were having?" asked the psychiatrist. "Well eighty bucks a visit ,3 times a week for a year is an awful lot of money!A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money I went and bought me a new pickup!" "Is that so!And how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?" "He told me to cut the legs off the bed!--Ain't nobody under there now!!!"

Jodie Sandberg is conducting a class on Thursday nights at the Club House in Ola. The club house is located next door to the 1st. Baptist Church. The class concerns a healthy diet and how to have a healthy life style. I went to the class 2 weeks ago and really enjoyed the class. The lesson that night was on FATS.You hear these people say that you should eliminate all fats and salt from your diet. That is not true--if you do yu will become ill. Our body needs some fats and salt. Jodie had samples that she had made of Raspberry Creme Delight and Better Than a Chocolate Bar Cookies. No sugar or milk was in either recipe and they were delicious! The class meets at 7:30 on Thursday nights.

Last Sunday, little Jacob visited his grandparents William and Treecie Price of Rover. Our church always has a time we greet each other before our pastor preaches. William left the choir, came down and picked up Jacob from Treecie and carried him around the sanctuary introducing him to everyone. Jacob is probably about 2 years old and was just a perfect little boy in the church service. I wish I could have taken a picture of the look on William's face as he looked down at that little grandson. There is absolutely nothing more wonderful then that first grandchild!!

My brother in law, Lacey Minnie, will have surgery on his shoulder in a couple of weeks. Last year he had knee replacement and now his shoulder. I'm just hoping he will take care of himself after the surgery.

Dennus Castleberry had a colonostophy at the V.A. hospital Tuesday. The surgeon discovered several polps that he removed.Dennus is doing fine. Loucinda and I went to see Dennus and June Wednesday night after church. We arrived at a good time cause June invited us to eat supper. She had peas, cornbread, squash, and okra from their garden, chicken strips and cucumbers and tomatoes from their garden. Now that was good eatin!!

Two ladies passed away this week that lived here around Gravelly when I was very young. Willa Dean Morehead James and Leola Hunnicutt Wagner. It seems we are young one day and in a short time we are old and leave this world. My sympathy to WillaDean"s and Leola's families.

Loucinda and her friend Frieda Banning drove to Mt. Magazine Lodge, just sight seeing a few days ago. Llucinda says it is absolutely beautiful and that the view is outstanding.

Tuesday night, Loucinda invited Frieda Banning, Retha Bowden and myself to go with her to the Sr. Citizen's building at Russellville to hear the Rambler's Band and Kelli Hill sing.I really enjoyed the band and I always love to hear Kelli sing. They had moved the chairs and tables to the back ofthe room and had a dance floor forthose that wanted to dance. I really enjoyed watching those senior citizens dance.Loucinda brought this lady over and said"Glenna you are famous" The lady wanted to meet me cause she said she always reads my column in the Record. She introduced meto her husband and their name is Rice.Mr. Rice had known my sister, kathy for a long time.I told Loucinda I wanted her to teach me to dance and she said a man needed to do that. We decided Dennus could teach me to dance so I told him Wednesday night I had come for my first dancing lesson. He start4d in his story that he can't dance but Isaw him and June dance at our F.V. reunion. But I think that means he will not be my dance instructor. Retha says just use a broom fro a poartner and learn. POersonally, I domn't think hat would work. The Ramblers will play at the Sr. Center at Russellville every 4th Tuesday of the month.

I met Mrs. John Meredith last week while at the Nola store. She's a lovely lady and I really enjoyed talking with her.I asked what she did during the day and she said she loved fishing in their pond. She said unfortunately she had caught 12 large turtles!! She and John love Gravelly, Ar.. They said one bad day in Ar. was better than 100 good days in Ca.

I was in the beauty shop at Ola a couple of weeks ago. A lady that was in the chair next to me said"Mrs. Glenna, you were my 5th grade teacher at F.V."It was the former Martha Lou Stephens. She had such petty dark hair. Not one gray hair and my students were only 10 years younger then I was-so Martha Lou is fortunate to still have that pretty dark hair. It was good talking with her. She said,"When you went off and left us a month before school was out and we had to go into Mr. Sullivan's room, we all cried."As I look back on that I sure wish I had not done what I did--it was a mistake. But Fred and I had married at Christmas in'52 and in April I was expecting a baby--Fred lived in Claremore and worked at Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa and one week end when he came home to see me, I said"I'm gong home with you, this weekend." I went to Mr. Lowe, my supt, and told him I was so sick all the time, I[d really like to quit a month early. Mr. Lowe could have said I had a contract and had to stay unti school was out, but he finally said I could go. I sure wish I could take that back but of course I can't .Seeing Matha Lou brought back good memories of that year.

Today, Thursday, I went with Loucinda to Waldron. My Aunt Syble Copeland is in the hospital with pneumonia.I was so glad I got to go see her today.Dortha said she was much better then she was yesterday. I look at those two sisters, Dortha and Peggy Jean, and think of how, for over a year, they have gone to the nursing home twice per day to check on their mother and do things for her. Now that she is in the hospital, they are with her most all the time. I really admire their dedication to their mother.Fred.,her son, goes to see her really often too.

Think on this. "Be careful what rut you choose--you may be in it for the rest of your life.

Sleep Areas

Gravelly News by Glenna Goodson

A lady was telling this story to her neighbor. She says: Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive, double-pane energy efficient kind. But this week, I got a call from the contractor complaining that his work had been completed a whole year and I had yet to pay for them. Boy,oh boy, did we go around!! Just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year....that"in one year the windows would pay for themselves."There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up, and he hasn't called back. Guess he felt really stupid, huh!

John Meredith sent me an email of very interesting signs that are displayed in front ofthis restaurant called the Casa D Ice--I suppose it was in Ca.. since he just came from there. I'd like to share a couple ofthem with you:
(1) "1903 my grandfather, 7 years old arrives on Ellis Island. Must learn English to survive--102 years later in our country, we must push 1 to proceed in English--What a crock!!
(2)At the current rate of legal and illegal aliens entering the country, August 2013 will be designated as "white history month."

At the rate I go to sleep driving and always having to stop and sleep, I came up with the idea that instead of Rest Areas we could have "Sleep Areas."Maybe we could have 2 or 3 between Ola and Gravelly.

I saw Micky Austin in the Gravelly store. He says to me,"I saw your car at the river one day and I decided you had pulled off down there and went to sleep and then forgot how to get home."Really, my son went fishing.

I'm sure some of you realized my mistake when I wrote that Loucinda told me about the Ice Bergs she saw in Alaska. Of course it was glaciers.Aren't you glad I'm not teaching your 4th grader his Social Studies?

Our Masonic building at Gravelly is looking beautiful as the new siding is almost finished. I was mistaken when I wrote that we had enough money for a new roof. But I'm sure more donations will come in and the new roof can soon be a reality.

One of my favorite parts of the Record is the 50 years ago column. A couple of weeks ago there was the news that Betty Ann Lowe was receiving one of her degrees from the University of Arkansas. The article mentioned some ofthe honors she received. I thought"and I attended Fourche Valley School with Betty Ann, with Margaret and John Lowe." I think of the Lowe children and their honors and degrees. If you would go back, beginning with the late 40's andthen the 50's and on--It is amazing that a school with such small classes and such a small school produced Doctors, Senators, Lawyers, Scientists, progressive farmers, professional base ball players--good citizens--and yet some in power that do not realize how great our school is--say--close it down!!Doesn't make sense does it?

I had noticed in Fowler's restaurant in Plainview that I had not seen Juana Lou Holt in quite awhile. I asked Phyliss and discovered that Juana and her husband had sold the restaurant to the youngest sister,Jan Ward and her husband,Brad. The restaurant is still filledwith people so the new owners are keeping up the fine tradition of good service and good food.

Jesse and Beth Haston had a little baby boy 2 weeks ago. The baby just weighed 2 lb. and 3 oz. The baby seems to be doing well, so praise the Lord.

Joy Maughn that works in Fowlers told me that her mother is the oldest"Fowler" Her name is Norma Crumley and she lives in Austin, Texas. Joy saysshe sends her mother the Yell County Record and Mrs. Crumley said to tell me she could hardly wait for the paper so she could read my column. How nice of her!!

I saw Junior Rhoades at the Emerson store Sunday. A lady was with him and I observed Junior was terriably attentive to this pretty lady. I find out later that day that Junior and the former Alice Friend of Nola were married about a week ago. Mycongratulations to them.

When I was a child, my family and I lived in Scott County--We lived on highway 28--the lane that led to my Grandmother Oglesbe's and to the Mulberry community was near our house. Bob and Leola Wagner were newly married and lived in a house on that Mulberry lane. Mr. Bob was called into service because it was during WW2 and I remember so well when he left for the service. I thought Leola was about the most beautiful lady I had ever seen. She would walk to our house and mail letters to Mr. Bob from our mail box. Nowthis wonderful lady, these many years later, is in St. Francis hospital in Tulsa, with the final stages of cancer. I pray her passing will be peaceful.

Janice and Joe James have gone on a short vacation to Texas. I called Johnny Turner and told him I had a job for him to which he replied"No you don't." I explain that Janice is in Texas and would he come and lead the singing for us at the Wing Church, today, Sunday. He gave me someaugrement but he came. We were very glad to have Johnny and we're thankful he led thesinging. We were also blessed to have Greg and Linda Latham, of Young Gravelly to come to worship with us. Greg is Janice James' brother. Greg and Linda came back Sunday night also and we were so proud. We had an unwelcome guest too--A skunk had gotten under the church and the ladies opened the doors and that evening they sprayed but a skunk is a skunk whereever he is!!

At the Adventist Church this past Sabbath, Dr. Sandberg gave the message. I always learn so much when he preaches.

At our services Sunday at Rover, I was so glad to see Priscilla Langley. Since Priscilla has moved to Plainview, it's difficult for her to get to church. Bless Ray and June Hawkins for going to get Priscilla and bringing her to church. It was also good to see Patsy Jean at our services. It was wonderful to hear that beautiful singing voice again. And as I listen to the man of God bringthe Word of God, I am so blessed. As I enter the doors of Rover Baptist Church--I feel safe. I know my pastor is not ging to waver from the Word of God..He knows what he believes and why he believes it and I can feel safe because the Word is truth that he proclaims!!

Wouldn't it be neat if we all could write this to the I.R.S.: Dear I.R.S., I would liketo cancel my subscription--Please remove my name from your mailer's list.!!

Slightly Cracked

Gravelly News by Glenna Goodson

Four women were driving across the country. Each one was from a different state---Idaho,Nebraska, Florida, and New York. Shortly after the trip began, the woman from Idaho started to pull potatoes from her bag and throw them out the window."I'm sick of those things!" she yelled,"They're all over Idaho!" A short time later, the woman from Nebraska began pulling ears of corn from her bag and tossing them from the car."We got so many of these in Nebraska,I'm glad to get rid of a few.,"explained the woman. Inspired, the woman from Florida opened the car door and pushed the New Yorker out!

I am writing this article on Father's Day, the 18th, so in my mind I am thinking of my Dad, Doc Oglesbee.I miss my Dad evry day even though he died in 1990. He was a wonderful Dad. He was not a Dad that said'do as I say, not as I do."He lived his faith in God every day. My Dad was an example to follow. That man never met a stranger and people loved him. As I got older, I could see that my Dad loved God ,first, then his family, hischurch and the Masonic Lodge. My dad was a deacon in the Free Will Baptist Church at the Mulberry community outside of Gravelly. Before air conditioning and heaters, my Dad was always first to the church to open up the windows and turn on the fans. In the winter time, he would start a fire in the stove so the church would be warm when the people came. My Dad loved to hunt and camp out with my brother, husband and friends. Everyne knew in the deer camp that my Dad would leave the camp on Sunday morning in time for Sunday School and church.. Then be back at thecamp. I learned from my Dad that it is good to love the Lord, that you look for the good things in people, to not gossip, to have a sense if humor .My siblings and I obeyed our Dad--not because he whipped us

to make us afraid------he never used hard discipline with us. We obeyed him because we respected

him. I thank God that He gave me the Dad I had!!

Loucinda Buford just came back from an Alaskan cruise. She left the 26th of May and rrturned the 9th of June. She had a great time. Two of the friends that went with her worked at Social Security in Russellville with her for several years. Another lady friend went along too. She described the ice bergs to me. Now that's something I'd like to see!!. the time on the ship, the Princess, was really enjoyable to her. She described to me the time they spent in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. I'm glad she had a goodtime but I'm doubly glad she's back home.

My son, Russell, visited with me almost 2 weeks. He went back to OKC last Friday and I really miss him. He did so many good things for me----fixed a shower in the bath tub for me, a lot of the tile squares had come offf the wall above the tub. I had saved them and he put them back on. he made and installed for me 3 shelves in the kitchen and one large shelf in the bathroom. He cleaned out my refrigerator and my cabinet under my kitchen sink. Russ bought a week's fishing license and caught an 8 and i/2 pound cat fish one day and then the next day he caught some perch. I kinda made a mess of frying the fish at the lake so Russ says,"I am frying the fish."We borrowed a fry-daddy and the fish were really good. I fried potatoes and made corn bread.

Diana O'bryant loves to go barefoot and I'm alwaysasking,"Where are your shoes." She told me last Friday that since it was not Sunday she could go barefoot and oput her Sunday shoes on for church. She then said,"You know how it is, we poor people just get a pair of shoes in the winter andthey have to last a yhear. What we were doing is remembering the way it was when we were kids. But Diana is so much younger then Iam, I was surprised that she remembered those times.

I purchased a new washer and dryer from Lowe's at Russellville. Their sales pitch is that they deliver (for $64 to Gravelly!) They install the new ones and haul off the old ones--Sounded good to me!. A couple of days later, they were to deliver the appliances. I had to go to Olaso Russ stayed here to wait fo Lowes". When I got back home, Russ said the delivery guys got my washer and dryer int othe laundry room and said to Russ"We don't do wires!" Well, Duh! Russ hooked them up for me and we did some washing.

My sister, Kathy Minnie, was chosen by the Easterb Star to be the Grand Representative in Ar for Australia. During her 2 year tenure, she will hopefully travel one time to Australia to their Eastern Star and their representative to Ar, will come here.

I correspond by email with Suz Mann, one of the daughters of Jack Jennings.I met her at Tootie Jennings Rhoades" funeral. We instantly "clicked" as it happens some times and it is good to have another friend. She e-mailed methis week and said to ask my readers what yu thnk are common courtesies, from older generations and the young. I got to thinking abou this and asked myself how many times do I hear the words "please, thank you, yes maam, no maam, excuse me". Do you men still open the door for a lady?I'm afraid these are not common courtesies in our society, nowadays.

At the Adventist Church at Ola the 10th, Dr. Ruff preached. His daughter, Aaron played the piano andchose to play"Great is Thy Faithfulness." She plays so beauifully. Dr. Sandberg taught the Bible lesson so well. Then yesterday, the 17th, Dr. Sandberg andtheir 6 year old daughter, Sheleah. were in charge ofthe opening service. Sheleah read the Scripture(remember she is nly 6 years old) and she prayed the opening prayer. Dr. Sandberg, then, played the guitar and he and Sheleah sang, "We Need to Get Back to the Basics of Life." Joe Harrison preached and his topic was Lovingthe Outcast. It was in inspirational message. At my Rover Baptist Church this Father's Day, Bro. Shipley had his daughter ,Emily, pass out ink pens to all the fathers in the congregation. You know Bro. Shipley has his own plumbing business and Johnny Turner says,"I bet it will say "Shipley Plumbing" on the pens. But I grabbed his pen to see if that was true and it was not.

Russ and I went to the Nola store for breakfast last Wednesday. There were the winning candidates--. Jim Forbes and Tommy VanOver. Tommy is now the J.P. in Scott County. Forbes won in Tuesdays's election but will face his Independent candidate n November for the office of Judge.

Remember--A friend is someone who thinks you are a good egg, even though you're slightly cracked--or sometimes slightly scrambled.!

Wrapped in Plastic

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

A blonde wating to earn some extra money, decided to hire herself out as a "handy woman" and started canvassing a nearby well to do neighborhood. She went to the front door of thefirst house and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do."Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch--how much will you charge?""How about $50?" and the man agreed. He told her the paint and everythingshe needed was in the garage. The man's wife , hearing the conversation said to her husband,"does she realize our porch goes all the way around the house.?"He replied"that's a bit cyncial isn't it?". The wife replied"you're right,--I guess I am starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes."A short time later the blonde came to the door to collect her money."You've finished already?" the husbandasked."Yes, the blonde replied,"and I had paint left over so I gave it 2 coats."Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50 and handed it to her."And by the way," the blonde said"it's not a Porch--it's a Lexus."

It is a 5 hour drive from Lake Texoma to Gravelly,Ar. I know because I took that drive Saturday. Of course I did not drive--I would have still been driving, looking for Gravelly, Ar. My son, Russell and I went to our cabin at the Lake last Tuesday andstayed until Saturday when Russdrove us back to Ar. We were planning tostop at Nola and when we came in sight ofthe nolastore, Russell says,"What is going on?" There were probably almost 100 cars there and all kinds of materials almost to the road. It was the community auction to benefit our Gravelly, Masonic Lodge. At our pie auction last month, enough money was raised to pay for the material and labor to repair and put siding on our building. I understand there was enough mney received at the community auction to replace our roof. We thank all of you that participated.

I was so happy to be back in the Rover Baptist Church today. I really missed my church. I go into church today and say "hi" to Johnny Turner. He says"I see that you didn't do anything with your hair while you were gone." Isay"Gee thanks Johnny", and then he says,You have a cowlick too, and your hair stands straight up."Someone says,"things are back to normal, Glenna is back and she and Johnny are off and running."Bro. Shipley preached, I believe, the best sermon I ever heard, this morning, on Philip andthe Ethopian Eunuch. I also missed my Bible class I teach at Wing while I was gone. I got a lot of hugs andthe words,"welcome back," today from those sweet ladies. One of the guys hugged me at Rover andsaid"I think the Record shut down while you were gone." Of course they didn't but it wassweet of him to say that. Ialso got a call today from Mrs. Bill Wilson of Ola. She thought I might know the health of Harold Montgomery of the Ola nursing home. I wassorry not to be able to answer her question and then she told me that her husband, Bill, was in the Ola nursing home, also.Shesaid he really enjoyed my column in the Record.. She told me they'd take him the paper and he'd say"Find the joke, find the joke."

I sent 2 weeks in OKC at our home there, with Russ our son. Russ and I got there the 17th early in the evening. Fred was driving up in the driveway at the same time we were. On Friday, my daughter, Annette took me shopping for my birthdayand Mother's Day. She bought me two tops and FOUR pairs of shoes!! Fred asked me,"Well did you need shoes?" and I told him "yes" but I have plenty of shoes now..

Thursday night, the 18th, was our granddaughter's high school graduation. Lezlie is 18 years old and has enough of the Indian blood of our adopted daughter to be absolutely"fall down" beautiful. Her graduation was in the beautiful, huge, Cox Center in OKC.Her high school wasWestmoore, just outside OKC. There were 651 graduates and Lezlie ranked no. 41,scholastically. In the graduation program they wrote that she was in the top 10% of her class and was listed in the National Honor Society.. She will begin college in Sept. and plans to be a pharmacist. Weare really proud of her. And she also has made straight A's from 1st grade through 12th grade. Because of this her parents are buying her a new car.

On the 19th, our grandson's wife, Heather, from Mulvane, Kansas, traveled to Guthrie, OK to the Eagle Ridge Institute where Robyn and her children are. She picked up Jake and Allyson for a week end visit with her and Ryan.Heather came to OKC and picked up uss and me to take us with them to Kansas for the weekend. It was a wonderful week-end with our grandson and his wife and our beautiful great-grandchildren. Ryan brought the kids back to Robyn on Sunday and we got to spend 2 hours with Robyn. Then Ryan brought Russ and me back to OKC.

While in OKC, Fred told Russ to take me to a good tire place where I couldget 4 new tires. We went to Hibdon's. They were very busy so we had to wait over 2 hours for them to install and adjust them. We noticed a Mexican employee was putting on my tires. Before he was finished, his employer called him into his office. A Mexican had come to purchase some items andcould not speak any English, so the Mexican putting on my tires, had to come in and translate!!It took several minutes before he could get back to my car!!Now, people there's something wrong with this picture!!If I went to Mexico to live, I betcha I would learn Spanish.

I really enjoyed the 5 days I spent at the Lake. Fred had several bags of frozen fish that he hadcaught in the past 3 weeks. So I cooked fish one night.Russell killed a squirrel one day and Icooked it for their breakfast the next day.Fred's oven would not work, so I put biscuitsin the micro-wave.Don't do that! They were so tough yu could hardly bite them. But Fred really enjoyed the squirrel. Unfortunately, Russ was helping Fred cut a tree and haul the limbs away and he was wearing a tank top and shorts. He got a terriable case of poison ivy.
My sister, Kathy, came to my house after we got back to Gravelly and said she'd bring Russ some lye soap that would help the itching. She told him to really lather up with it.He told me it didn't seem to lather at all and then he saw a corner of plastic wrap on the soap and discovered that Kathy had wrapped the soap in plastic wrap. When he got the plastic wrap off, the soap did its job. Russ

said he felt stupid trying to wash with soap wrapped in plastic wrap.

Remember this: God meets a man that is searching for Him with all his heart.
