You could tell it was not finished

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson for JUNE 6th

A newlywed lady named Janis really wanted to cook good meals for her new husband. She would bake cakes and he observed her using cake mix and later he would say "My mother cooked from scratch." Whatever she cooked whether it was biscuits, cakes or pies, her husband always said the same thing "My mother cooked from scratch." One day Janis decided she just must go find some of this scratch at the grocery store so she could cook as well as her mother in law. She walked up and down the grocery aisles but could not find any scratch. Janis asked the grocery store manager where she could find the scratch. He told her to buy scratch she had to go to a feed store.Janis went to the feed store and asked the clerk there if he had Scratch--he said of course it was in the back and he went to the back of the store and brought a very large bag of Scratch. He asked Janis how many chickens she had and she told him she had no chickens. The manager said to have Scratch you had to have chickens. On her way home Janis went to a farm where she knew they sold chickens and she bought 8 chickens and put them in the trunk of her car. When Janis got home, she put the chickens in their fenced front yard. Janis' husband came home from work and hurried inside and asked why were there chickens in their front yard. So Janis told her husband about buying the Scratch so she could cook as well as his mother and that she was told if she had Scratch she had to have chickens, so she bought the chickens. Her husband did not know whether to laugh or scream but this one thing he knew--he had to show Janis that there was more then one meaning of the word Scratch!!!

I want to apologize for the abrupt ending of my column last week. You could tell it was not finished. I was typing my column on my computer and when I was down to my last three sentences,Poof, I lost the whole column. I pushed key after key but could not get it to come back up--but I had pushed "Send" but thought it did not send. I typed the column again but never could decide if it sent or not--so the column that Julie got was the unfinished one--so that is the reason it ended so weird. Computers!!!I will never understand them!!

Bill Workman's place at Gravelly is getting to be a meeting place for people after church, to eat.Last Sunday,Norma and Rod Rupe, Grace Mitchell Brasher, Norma's mom,Vickie and Jim Roberson.a guy I did not know, and myself ate together. Bill hasa new ice cream machine and Jim was waiting for the machine to make the ice cream but finally he gave up and they went home. But I stayed and got me some ice cream. So Bill and Yvonne will fix you something good to eat if you come on down.

Bro, Shipley"s and Kathy's youngest, Emily , graduated from high school a couple of weeks ago. We had a little gathering for Emily a couple of weeks ago after church on Sunday night. She will begin college in a few months. Cindy Clement's older daughter, Rachel, graduated from Waldron and will go to college out of state.

I was so thrilled to see Katy Abrams picture in the Record. This young lady has won a national honor. She has been nameda U.S. National Award winner in Science. When we read that only 10% of students in the U.S. win this award, we are all that more proud of Katy. She is destined for greatness

Kathy and Lac ey did not get their passports in time to go to Australia. They applied for those passports in March and it makes me very sad that probably just because someone, somewhere, did not do their job, the passport was not sent in time. They had their airline tickets to leave from L.R. the 29th.
Maybe another time.

Peggy Dowdy e-mailed me a picture ofthe most fabulous, beautiful chair, I ever saw.Alle Lee Hunnicutt Defoor was Peggy's aunt, and one of Allie Lee's daughters, Gloria, is an artist.Peggy commissioned Gloria to paint her a special chair for her porch. Gloria got a cracker barrel chair and then painted her own designs on the chair. The paintings are really outstanding. Peggy says the picture does not do it justice because you cannot se e the seat of it. Every plank is a different design and color.

I always look forward to the weekends. The 7th day of the week, Saturday the Sabbath Day, I worship with my Adventist friends at Ola. Then Sunday, the 1st day ofthe week, the Lord's Day, i worshop at Wing where I teach a Bible class and then I go to Rover Baptist Church to worship with them. I hada good example in my parents that taught me to love the church. Daddy always camped out during deer season butthe rest ofthe guys knew Daddy would leave the camp on Sunday mornings to go to Mulberry Church. How thankful I am for the freedom we have to worship as we please.

Our Rover Baptist Church's Frontier Day on Memorial Day was well attended. We had a alot of games, cake walks, horse shoes, a dunking booth and train rides forthe kids.. Johnnie Ray Blankenship drove the train and that seemed to be very popular with the kids. Chris Light was the one in the dunking booth and he sure got dunked a lot. Sarah Light and Brenda Turner were clowns. They made their own clown suits and they were really outstanding. They walked in our parade from our church to Rover Park. Brenda says "Next year we clowns will have something with a motor for us." Bruce Lee rode his prize bull in our parade. The Rovers for Jesus and the Yates Family provided us with beautiful music. We had a lot of good food and fellowship The donations we received will send several young people to church camp.Anna Jewell Fryar was at the Park. Jewell Marie Webb brought her.Anna Jewell looked well after her 9 day stay in the hospital.

Remember this: God specializes in lost causes.

The lab coordinator

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men aong the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate"Why are yu eating grass?" he asks one of the men.'We don't have any money for food,"the poor man replied."We have to eat grass."Well then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you." the lawyer said "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me, they are over there under that tree."Bringthem along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he said"You come with us too,"The second man, in a pitiful voice said"But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me." Bring them all, as well ,the lawyer answered. They all entered the car which was not easy, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once underway, one ofthe poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said,"Sir you are too kind.Thank you for taking all of us with you."The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high!"

Our valley is saddened at the untimely death of Melissa Sherril,. Melissa is one of the "Fowlers" and worked at the Plainview Fowlers. She was only 29 years of age when she was killed one morning this week in a car accident as she was drivng to work. Melissa was so sweet and pretty and I keep remembering that pretty blonde hair and brown eyes.Melissa leaves behind 3 little girls. My love, sympathy and prayers go out to the family.

At the Brad Hunnicutt concert I met Willy and Pam Humphreys. Willie's Dad was Fiddler Humphreys and mother was Nadine Hunnicutt. I also met Lovene Watkins Morgan whose mother was Vivian Hunnicutt. She told me she realy enjoyed my column. She says she enjoys reading about J.B.Wagner cause he is the other side of her family. And I was glad to see Leo and Bobbie Hunnicutt--parents of Brad. I believe that Bobbie has fallen into a fountain of youth--she looks so young and pretty.

At the funeral of Louise Person , we celebrated her life.Louise loved her Lord and her family. Her family really rise up and call her blessed.Rover Baptist Church took food to the family. Louise loved Rober church--she was a member there for several years and all 7 of her children were saved there. She had been a member ofthe Wing church for several years and there was just something unique about gong to Wing Church and meeting with Louise, Edie and Hazel. My son Ellis that visited with me one time, says there is just a special feeling you get as you enter the church. When I had to be gone, Louise would teach the Bible class. The Pattons, Tim, Becky and Emily sang "Serenaded by Angels" and it was truly beautiful. I told someone that the piano there was 100 years old but with Becky Patton playing, you never would know it. Louise leaves quite a legacy in 7 children 15 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Kelly Virbel, niece of Jody Sandberg, goes to work June 4th at Ar. Tech Univ. She will work in the chemistry lab as the lab coordinator. I am so proud of Kelly and I know she will do well. She will also contiue her education--which includes getting into medical school,as she works.

I talked to Butterfly Potter this week. She says Doyce is dong much better since all those weeks he suffered because of his accident when he was working on his truck. Doyce even was able to use his riding mower and mow their lawn this week.

Think on this--a man has a flat--he pulls over to the side ofthe road and is changing his tire. A fellow pulls up by the side of him asks"Oh, did you have a flat?" The man replies, "No I just pulled over here to rotate my tires."

Katie Fickle's army son is fighting in Bagdag now..He saved two of his buddy's lives and received a medal for this.

Tell someone this week that yu love them.

It doesn't get any better than that!!

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that happens, just pull the plug." His wife got up, unplugged the TV,and threw out all his beer.

I had a good birthday the 14th. My kids called me and sent gifts. Fred called and left a message with him singing Happy Birthday. It was so comical because he cannot sing.Jody Sandberg and Sheleah and Kelly Virbel called me frm Ola to wish me happy birthday. They were on a speaker phone and all three said happy birthday and said"We love you,Glenna," It doesn't get any better then that!!

This week I took Betty Lampkin some books I had gotten from my book club. I just open my box of books when they come in the mail see what they are and take them to Betty to read first because she will read those 4 books I took her, in 4 days.. She is somewhat better from her stroke but she has a way to go.

I was at Plainview Fowlers last Tuesday when the electrical storm and wind hit. One of the waitresses got a call from her husband and said their car port had blown to the top of their house and part of their roof was gone. She lives at Rover and I thought "Oh, no, our pavilian at Rover Baptist Church."And sure enough, as I drove by I saw that it had been blown down.It was almost completed and it is sad but the guys will just start rebuilding soon. When Bro Shipley and the other guys in our church were buildingthe pavilian, they worked on Saturdays and ladies of the church would bring them food at lunch time. They always asked Louise Gillum to bake them a pie. Louise told Bro. Shipley that she believed he and Philip Robinson pushed the pavilion down just so she would need to start baking pies again as they start rebuilding.

These stormy days take my mind back to my childhood here in Gravelly, Ar. My Aunt Dora and Uncle Loy and their family and our family always got together when it was stormy.Aunt Dora and my Mom could just hear a loud clap of thunder and in that cellar we would go. Those dirt cellars we had then constituted more danger then the storm did. Sometimes there would be a snake in the cellar and always spiders, and creepy, crawling things.I was so afraid of storms that when Fred and I married, I would walk the floor and wring my hands when it was stormy. By God's and Fred's help I stopped being afraid of storms and I was determined my boys would not be afraid and they were not. One time my mother was visiting us in OKC and the sirens went off , warning that a tornado was on its way. My boys climbed to the roof of our house to watch the tornado form!!My mother almost had a heart attack and said to get those boys inside!!

I am so glad I went to Danville, First Baptist, to hear the performance of Brad Hunnicutt last Friday night.Isn't it wonderful that one of our own is a professor of Music Theory in Raleigh, N.C.?The concert was great!!My favorite piano pieces were the waltzes. My favorite song he sang was "Christmas in the Trenches." The song described how during WW1 both sidescalled a truce at Christmas, shared with each other about their families and sang and talked together. How amazing to me that this really happened. I was thrilled when Brad told me he reads my column in the Record. As he was singing his last song, he dedicated the last verse to me cause he said"I read her column." That made me very happy. I betcha, Bobbie, his mother, sends the paper to him.Brad had all the Hunnicutts stand that were in attendance and there were several there. They had a Hunnicutt family reunion this past Saturday at the Gravelly Lodge Hall.

My sweet, wonderful Christian friend of Wing, Louise Person, departed this life May 16th. She was one ofthe sweetest ladies I ever knew. I will write more about Louise in next week's column.

As I think of my sweet friend, Louise, i think of a scripture found in Proverbs---"The memory of the righteous will be a blessing."

As usual, it was delicious

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

Lawyers should never ask a Southern grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked,"Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"She responded,"Why yes I do know you

Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. you lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you will never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes I know you." The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones do you know the defense attorney?" She again replied." Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. His law practice is one of the worst in the state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him." The defense attorney almost died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench, and , in a very quiet voice, said, "If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you to the electric chair.,"

Brad Hunnicutt will present a piano concert, Friday, May 18th, 7pm, at Danville First Baptist Church. Brad is the oldest child of Leo and Bobbie Hunnicutt. I understand that the concert Brad presented last year was excellent, so I'm looking forward to hearing this one.

I was working in my yard one day and heard this voice that seemed to be coming from the sky.I looked upward, thinking I might see an angel--or maybe a ghost--but it was one of Cindy Clements' teen agers talking on her cell phone from the roof of her house!! Cell phone reception is very bad here and the girls have found they can get a good reception from their roof!!

Mycousin Billy Highfill's older daughter, Rene, is really into fitness. She runs each day and exercises. She decided she would try Yoga as part of her exercise. She was showing her Dad her yoga cloth where she would sit to do the Yoga. Billy Euel took one look at that cloth, decided it looked like a prayer shawl, and asked "Rene, are you sure you can do Yoga and still be a .S.Baptist?"She assured him she could.

I went with Loucinda to Russellville , Thursday. We went to a couple of flower nursersies and purchased more flowers. She took me to Hastings where I purchased a book and a couple of CD's We ate at Wendy's cause we like their baked potatoes. We had a good time.

Bill Workman of Gravelly has been ill all week. I have really missed Bill being at his store. Yvonne, his wife, iscarrying on for Bill. I was in the store Wednesday and told Yvonne I probably needed a couple of quarts of oil in my car. I told her I did not know how to check the oil but I could pour it into my car. About that time Mark Wagner came into the store and Yvonne says"Mark will test your oil and put some in your car."Bless Mark--what is he to say--I do not want too- so he takes a couple of quarts of oil. He checks theoil andsure enough I need two quarts.
Mark says he can't ;pour it very well without a funnel and I say I can" and grab the can from Mark and proceed to pour it all over the car and Mark grabs it and finishes the job.Mark is living back in Gravelly now and Isure am glad--he can change my oil any time he wants too

At the Young Gravelly Cemetery, there will be decoration and a pot luck luncheon, for all of those who have relatives buried in that cemetery.Bring a pot luck dish and eat and fellowhip with friends and family. This will be May 20th.

While in Fowler's Restaurant in Plainview, Wednesday, a man came by my table and said he wanted to meet me cause he knew, my Dad, Doc Oglesbee. His name was Connie Coker from Dardanelle I told him I had the most wonderful Dad in the world and Mr. Coker's daughter said"No, I do." I was glad she said that and she is truly blessed to still have her Dad.

I saw the most wonderful performance Friday night. A group of y\oung people called Ringers of Hope gave a sacred concert at the Methodist Church in Ola.These 12 young people ring bells to play songs and it was truly beautiful and amazing. The kids are from Ouachita Hill's Academy, which is located on 381 acres in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. This academy is a self-supporting 7th Day Adventist boarding academy. These kids are all high school students and it was so refreshing to see such smiling, happy young people. Truly, Jesus makes the difference!!!

One day last week, my son Russell called me frm the Lake where he and Fred are. He told me he was really worried about his Dad because his face was swollen twice its size and Russ thoufght he had either had another stroke or he had been bitten by something. He wanted me to call him later and try to get him to go to a Dr. since he had told Russ he was not going Icalled and tried to get him to go but he kept saying "No:"and finally said if he was not dead by the next morning he'd consider gong to a Dr.He was better the next morn and Russ went fishing. He said in about an hour here came Fred driving his truck very fast. Remember he is almost blind now and certainly is not supposed to drive..Hestopped by

Russell andsaid "Get in and drive me to the Dr."His face had swollen again. The Dr. said he had had a
reaction to a mosquito bite and gave him a shot and medicine to rub on it. He is much better now.

I observed decoration at Parks Cemetery Saturday. My Copeland cousins were there, Dortha, Peggy and Ted..Bob Aaron Caviness and his wife Mary were there along with two of their daughters, Lori and Marcie who live in Shawnee, Ok.We also visited with Shirley Jo and Larry Aikman. Loucinda came with her cousin, Jimmy B. Buford of Ola.At lunch time, Dortha, Peggy,Loucinda,Jimmy and I ate at Nola.At lunch we saw my sister Kathy, her family and even the baby Wyatt was there.

Sunday wasa good
Mother's Day for me. I heard from all three of my kids.A t the Wing Church, Janice James gave all ofus ladies a red rose. It wasso pretty with baby breath. Then as I went on to my Rover Baptist Church, I was so glad to see Ruby Grace and Bill Holmes. After church they were gong to the nursing home to see Ruby Grace's mom, Irene Williams. When Ruby Grace and Bill are here they usually visit our church and we are blessed to have them. Then after church, I went back to Loucinda's where Loucinda andher son Scott were waiting for me to go to Little John'sat Danville to eat. As usual, it was delicious.Sunday night I went to Plainview to the Jesus Name Pentecostal church to hear the group Satisfied.I just know Dr. Sandberg and Greg Howard in the group. I'm sorry Ido not know the nam

es of the others in the group. They were excellent. I love to hear Dr. Sandberg play the harmonica. He also played the flute and guitar. At the end of the program they gave all of us a C,D. I came home and listened to mine. It was excellent.

Remember God's blessings are good--they are new every morning.

Can you believe he trusted me to drive his truck?

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

The local sheriff in a small town was looking for a deputy. He posted ads in the paper, and sure enough, Lisa, a wonderful looking blonde, went in to try out for the job. he wasn't the sharpest nail in the bucket, but seeing that she had a pleasantness about her, the sheriff gave her an interview. 'kay," the sheriff dtrawled, lisa, what is 1 and 1?" "11" she enthusiastically replied.. he sheriff thought to hmself,"That's not what I meant, but she is right in a way." "okay, Lisa, what two days of the week start with the letter"T?" "Shucks, that;s easy, Today and Tomorrow!" he sheriff was again surprised that Lisa supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself.. He thought of his next question carefully to make sure there would be no misunderstanding about the answer. "Now,Lisa, listen carefully. Who killed Abraham Lincoln?" Lisa looked a little surprised, thought really hard for a minute andfinally admitted, "I don't know." "Well why don't you go home and work on that one for a while,"the sheriff replied. So Lisa wandered over to the salon where her pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview. How'd it go?" they all asked. Lisa was so happy. "It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

I am so proud of Paul Anthony of F.V. school. The grandson of Larry and Shirley Aikman has been accepted by the School for Math, Sciences and the Arts at Hot Springs..Paul will move into the dormitory there in August. So Paul will spend the last two years of high school in this school. He will receive his high school requirements, plus college classes. Paul is a special young man, and I wish
him well.

Tommy Vanover is mowing the Parks cemetery now Tommy informed me that there will be a donation box at the cemetery where we can place our donations.I understand Bruce Lee made the donation box andalso he is making the donaton boxes for other cemeteries. Bruce Lee is a master at many things and Iam so glad he is in our Valley and one of our teachers at F.V.

Bill and Yvonne Workman traveled to Tahlequah,Ok. to see their grandson, Dustin Ray Workman graduate from college. Dustin graduated this past Saturday. While Bill and Yvonne were gone, their daughter, Robin, ran the store for them.

At the end of your day, do you stop to be grateful for friends that have blessed you this day?Bill Workman doesso much to help me, It's not in his job description to check the oil in my car, add oil and power steering fluid, but he does. How thankful Iam that Bill and Yvonne opened their store at Gravelly. Bill got my Toyota running--put in a radiator andbeat out the hood to where it is okay. Bill is a jack of all trades.

Two Sundays ago I hadcar trouble just as I had started over the Danville mountain. A very nice patrolman came to see if he could help me. Icalled my sister andasked her to try to get hold of Johnny Turner from my church, to come after me. The patrolman stayed with me until Johnny got there. Johnny started immediately fussing at me and griping at me and I would just yell backat him. The patrolman just stood there, looking at us strangely.. Finally he says to Johnny,"Sir, you sure are griping at her," and Johnny says,Well, that is my calling" and the patrolman says,"well you're certainly living up to your calling." Johnny drove me to the Rover church where he was doing some work. He told me I could drive his truck to my house anddrive it back that night for our Butterflies meeting and church. Can you believe he trusted me to drive his truck? I was glad I got it back to him in one piece--didn't even hit a deer!! Bless Johnny for being a friend when I really needed someone. He also took me home after church.

I went with Loucinda Buford to the decoration at Rover and then on to Bluffton Baptist Church and the cemetery to see friends there. We took food and ate at the Rover park with the people that had gathered to eat together and then go on to decoration at the Rover cemetery. I was so gladto see the Gillums that were there, the McCools and Bob Anderson.Harold Gillum's brother, Pat was there with his wife, beautiful daughter, son in law and two little grandsons. It is alwaysso great to talk to Pat andhis family. You go away feeling good just from being in their company.Bob Anderson is always so interesting cause he can give you a history ofthe alley. He told Loucinda that you can choose your friends but you just have to accept your relatives---he and Loucinda are distant relatives and Loucinda told him they couldbarely match their DNA.

Chuck
McCool informed us that he was having acustomer appreciation day at Plainview Park, June 16th. They will have food and entertainment. The Acausticatz band will be the entertainment along with Kelly Hill that will sing. POete Brown ,frm the band, was at the Rover POark with us. POete was the state fiddle champion one year. If you want to learn more about the band go to www. acausticatz. com on your comouter. sure wish Icould attend but I have an appointment in OKC to have eye surgery during that time. At Bluffton I visited with the Ferguson's, ,S.A, Mary Alice andBetty. I was tempted to cut off .S.A,'s legs cause he says, "Glenna Jean what has happened to you--you are not the LITTLE Glenna Jean I knew at F.V" Well, no, unfortunately I havw grown and it is not in height.!! It was good to see the Aikman brothers andCharles and Rita Daniel. I got to see pictures of the beautiful Daniel greatgrand daughter. I walked over thecemetery with Leslie Harvey. He and June take care ofthecemetery there at Bluffton, and they do a wonderful job. They also donated an American flag they have installed in the cemetery. The flag has a light on the top.

Have you noticed that when you combine the two words "The IRS" that it reads Theirs.?
