The devil sent me a credit card

Gravelly news byG lenna Goodson

A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. "Good morning.: said the young man. "If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners. "Go away!" said the old lady. "I haven't got any money!", I'm broke!" and she proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed wide open.Don't be too hasty, he said, "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration." And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure on to her hallway carpet. "If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces ofthis horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder. The old lady stepped back and said, " Well I hope you've got a really good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning."

Last Monday night I attended the Women of Faith meeting at the Promise Land Center at Wing. It was a good meeting and I had really a good time. Pastor Dan prepared Pizza for our meal and dessert Pizza too. It was yummy!!!It was so good to see Susan Rhoades, Kathy Lott, Shirley
Maxie, Mary Powell and two of her daughters, Jordan and Brittany. I was glad to renew acquaintances with Joyce Evans and her daughter Amy Pierce. Shirley Maxie's daughter, Christy Dees was there and I was glad wo leaarn that Christy is teaching Kdgn. in Waldron Schools. She told us one of her funny experiences--she has Hispanic children in her class that are having trouble with our English language.. She asked a 5 year old Hispanic to count andthe girl counted to 10.Christy says"That is good, can yu count any higher?" The little girl raised her arm HIGH in the air and started counting to 10 again. Kids, aren't they great ?

The Promise Land allows the kids that ride the F.V. bus to get off the bus there for a fun time after school. The first thing they do is help the kids with their home work. Then they can play games with supervision.I volunteered to help with the kids and I look forward to doing that on Thursdays.

I attended the FV ball game Tuesday night. F.V. played County Line. They lost their first two games but the Sr. boys won.

Thursday night I had a good time at F.V Fall Festival.First of all the royalty, boys and girls kdgn. thru 12th marched in. All of the kids were pretty and handsome. I was so proud of my favorite 7th grader. Toby Morrison. He lookedso nice all dressed up. He said "Mrs. Goodson, look at my shoes." That 7th grader already wears a 12 1/2 size shoe.!! Good foundation there, Toby. I played bingo sitting nextto my brother in law, Lacey. He won--I did not. Then I participated in the cake walk. Bruce Lee was in charge ofthe cake walk and gee, he told me to pay attention !!Again, I was walking next to Lacey--he won a cake and I did not !!! But it was fun anyway.

I worked in our church's food pantry last Tuesday. We helped 4 people with food. One was a young man and as he was writing his name, I noticed he had beautiful hands. I told him that he had musician hands and he said he playedthe bass and was part of a band. I wish good days forthis young man.

John Meredith says to me, "the devil sent me a credit card so I bought another 4-wheeler and gave it to my wife." John and his wife are having fun riding their 4-wheelers.

I want to tell you a funny true story. I know these people and they live in OKC. Mary, an elderly lady decided she did not want to pay for cable t.v. any more so she contactedthe cable people to remove the cable--which they did. She toldthe people in her church that she had her cable removed. A week later she came up to a guy in her church andsaid "Gary, I want you to come see what is wrong with my t.v. On the back on the TV it says "Cable Ready," but I can't get cable !! Gary had to explain to Mary the meaning of Cable Ready.

The Wing Commjunity Church had Janet Harrison visit us Sunday morning. Sunday night 3 ofthe King family were there. We were blessed by the visitors.

Good advice---Never approach a bull from the front--a horse from the rear--or a fool from any direction.

All of a sudden the hog turned

Gravelly News by Glenna Goodson

A U.S. Marine squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi terrorist, badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the squad leader asked the injured Marine what had happened. The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed Iraqi. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road. I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scumbag who got what he deserved, and he yelled back that Ted Kennedy is a fat, good-for-nothing, left wing liberal drunk who doesn't know how to drive. I then said that Osama Bin Ladin dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited ignorant fool. He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well so does Hillary Clinton !" "And there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a truck hit us."

Our 7th FV school reunion, the 13th, was just great!! I would say that we had about 200 in attendance. The 50 yr. class of 1957 was honored. This class had made reservations at the Castleberry restaurant at Danville on Friday night. There were 19 that attended--some were wives or husbands of the graduates. Friday when some of us were there getting things ready for the reunion, Betty Sullivan Ward and Mary Jo King Gossage, of the '57 class brought some posters to out up. I was impressed that Betty Sullivan Ward had made each ofthe class a memory book. It showed their journey from the time they were in grade school. It was a wonderful memory book. Mary Jo is just as bubbly and energetic as she was in high school. My siister in law, Betty Goodson Lewis was in this class and it was good to see Betty again. Also Jo Garner Goodson Runnels was in the class--Jo was married to Fred's brother, Jake, until Jake's death, several years ago. Jo, and Henry, her husband, live in Bartlesville, OK Betty and her husband live in Broken Arrow, Ok.

When the classes wre introduced by year, the class of '52 had 11 and the most there, as for as numbers are concerned. Our class of '49 had 7 there and since we had only 13 in our graduation class, Tom Sullivan told me we had the most percentage wise. This ,of course excludes the '57 class

There were so many at the reunion that I enjoyed talking too and getting reacquainted. There were 4 there that I taught in 5th grade in '53-'53. The were Ola Jean Hunnicutt, Peggy Copeland, Annette Person and Buel Thompson.

Delmas Hunnicutt was someone I had not seen in over 50 years. Here is Delmas about 6'4" tall and his little wife about 4'11' ! What a cutecouple !

It was good to see Meechie Mabry and his wife. Meechie has had a really bad time physically for over a year and he's looking much better.

The class of '57 were sitting in chairs on the gym floor and many had requested that the reunion committee contact Amy Defoor that taught them in 1st grade Amy was there and sat with them.--they asked Selby Brown, a former teacher at FV to also sit with them as a favorite high school teacher.

I was talking with some during our visitation time and a pretty lady came up and said "I'm looking for Glenna Goodson."I said "here I am", and the lady hugged me. It was the former Billie Juanita Stephens. She wanted to give me a copy of some of her poems. They are absolutely beautiful ! I am so humbled that Billie gave me copies of these wonderful poems. I've already read them over and over--they're good for the soul !

It was so good to see Billy Jack Bogle, Claude Williams, the "Lowe" sisters, the Parish Twins,Deltha Jean and John Lowe and Mary McConnell. And it was so good to see my friend, Melba Reed. There are many others that I loved visiting and talking with and I hope I see you next year

Laura Gagne was taking pictures at our reunion for the Yell County Record. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures in the Record. I want to thank Laura for doing that.

As Icame to the gym Friday I was amazed at the special place between the gym and the school that Einella Lewis, 5th grade teacher, and her Science class and others in the school, have developed. There is a fountain and water fall, beautiful flowers and huge, beautiful rocks. Einella has received grants to do this. Einella told me that thre are 17 fish in the water fall. They have a scare crow in the garden and Einella says the scare crow has a habit of disappearing and then reappearing and one day it was inh her class room. Sounds like something Bruce Lee would do !!Check him out, Einella !!The old well house that is on the grounds will be made into an old school house with a bell tower.

Weston Godfrey, I think Weston is about 14 years of age, the son of Allan Ray and Cynthia Austin killed a wild hog during bow and arrow deer season. He shot the pig and it ran away squealing with the arrow in its back.Weston chased the hog and all of a sudden the hog turned and chased Weston !!Weston had a long hunting knife and stabbed and killed the hog. Good job, Weston !!

Sunday, Rita Daniel came to the Wing Community Church and then went on with me to Rover Baptist Church to worship with us. Both churches were so glad to have Rita visit with us.

I received a blessing in the mail Saturday. Larry Wilson sent me a tape of him singing and playing his guitar. The songs are really soul-searching.

God is blessing us so much at Rover Baptist Church. Last week our building was paid for !!We are so thrilled and wantto thank the Lord and those that gave so faithfully.

We took a bath in a wash tub

Gravelly news by Glenna Goodson

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray---"Take only ONE. God is waatching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."

Where do you go to relax??I like to sit in my front yard under a shade tree and read a book or watch the birds. You won't believe this but my friend, Debbie in OKC says she goes to Wal-mart to relax!!Can you believe that? WAL-MART--where there are huncreds of people looking as if they are on a mission as they push that cart about 50 miles per hour!! But Deb goes early in the morning, gets herself a Hershey bar and a coke and pushes a cart--very slowly--and relaxes!!Since I have to drive at least 35 miles to the nearest Wal-mart, that relaxing option is out for me. Maybe some of you would like to try it.

Last Tuesday, I met Kelly Virbel in Ola, left my car at the beauty shop, rode with her to Russellville Tech University where Kelly works in a Science Lab. She showed me the different labs and introduced me to different instructors, as her "Grandma". I have told Kelly I have adopted her as my granddaughter. It was interesting to see the different labs and get an idea of how they work. Then Kelly took me to Hastings where I could shop for and look at books--my very favorite thing. And also find new Johnny Cash DVD's. There is a lovely place at the back of their store where they sell food and drinks and have good chairs and small tables where you can sit. So I sat and read until Kelly and a friend came and took me to lunch. After lunch, they dropped me at Penney's and my niece ,Ashly, picked me up after she got out of class. It was a good day.

Deer season will soon be here. I can tell you guys how to get your deer the very first day, if you live in Yell Co.Bring your little chair from your deer stand--sit in a ditch between Bluffton and Briggsville---in no time at all, 5 or 6 deer will be there fixing to bound out in front of a car--so bang, bang--shoot your deer !!

5 of my 6 Highfill cousins will be here next week end for our FV school reunion. It will be so good to see them again. The majority of people that come to our reunion are n their 60's and 70's. We love to visit, share stories, sing, eat together. We make it known a year in advance when the reunion will be---it is placed on the school calendar, with the Two River's Supt approval and those in other states can plan in advance.

It was fun to talk to Bobby Darrell Hunt and Bill Workman at Workman's store last Friday. Bob and I were talking about "the good ole days." Bob says--"We took a bath in a wash tub in our kitchen. The cracks were so wide in the floor that we could just pour the water out on the floor and give the rooster sitting under the floor, a bath. We were talking about the fact that most of us that lived in those" good ole days" did not have a car. Bob said if we kids were walking along the road and a car came along, it took our parents several hours to find us cause we were so scared of the car, we took off to the woods.

Clark Smith came from FV Thursday and fixed my computer. I had not been able to send messages since I had returned from OKC. Clark Smith had my computer fixed in just a few minutes.

Last week, since I had no computer to send my column to the Record, I went to FV to use one of their computers.I really appreciate Lisa Davis, the media spec ialist, helping me. She had me type my column and then save it. Lisa put it on a disc and sent it to the Record. And all the time she was patient and kind. I really appreciated Lisa's time and help.

Charles Dearing, son of Kelly and Rick Dearing, won a trophy at Plainview's Frontier Day. The trophy was given by the Plainview Library for Charles' outstanding work for them. I congratulate this young man.

Fred plans for our son, Russell, to take him to his sister's, Gloria's. who lives in Wann, Ok during the Oct. and Nov deer season. Even though Fred cannot hunt due to his loss of sight, he wants to be there with the other hunters and with Gloria and her family. I'm really hoping that Fred will come to Gravelly in November.

A lady named Bettie Jones has been swending me really good e-mails. She sent me nature pictures called "When God Paints"I e-mailed to tell her how beautiful the pictures were. She rep;ied that she wanted me to know how much her sister and she enjoyed my column. Then she said they looked upon me as extended family--her Great-grandmother on her Dad's side was a Goodson. Bettie writes that the lady was full blood Indian and was blind. Mary Wall, Bettie's sister, is a retired teacher and Bettie is still enjoying substituting. Bettie e-amiled me that her grandfather was Homer Snow who years ago had a large farm east of Ola.Lester Wall was their Dad.

Sunday, Joe and Janet Harrison and Kelly Virbel visited our Wing Community Church. we were so glad to have them visit. . At my Rover Baptist church, Chris Light sang two very inspiring Specials and Bro. Shipley preached on humility--simething to really make you think. Several of our regulars were absent--Johnny and Brenda Turner were in Dover, Ar. where they were attending the christening of a new grandchild.

I ate at Bill Workmans' Sunday after church, Isaw Paul Wiggins, Junior Rhoades and his wife, Roy and Dorotha Austin.Billy Lofland and his son Jacob, and there were others I did not know. Yvonne and Robin had prepared ;pinto beans, cornbread, chili, turnip greens and a berry cobbler.
Mighty Tasty!!!
