On his tractor just watching us

Gravelly News by Glenna Goodson

Two litle boys, ages 8 and 10, are excessively mischievous. They are always getting into trouble and their parents know all about it. If any mischief occurs in their town, the two boys are probably involved. The boys' mother heard that a preacher in town had been successful in discipling children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The preacher agreed, but he asked to see them individually. So the mother sent the 8 year old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the preacher in the afternoon. The preacher, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly,"Do you know where God is, son?"The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open.So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone,"WHERE IS GOD?" Again, the boy made no attempt to answer. The preacher raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed,"WHERE IS GOD?!!"The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked,"what happened?" The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied,"We are in BIG trouble this time. GOD is missing, and they think we did it!"

Tuesday Loucinda and I went to Russellville to purchase materials for our F.V. reunion. We were able to get mostly what we needed at Wal-mart and Staples. Just outside of Danville, nearthe UNI store, there is a menninite fruit and vegetable stand. We stopped and I bought pourple hulled peas, cucumbers, tomatoes,,peaches and a watermelon.I've never seen more beautiful tomatoes. They are huge and just perfect. And to think they were grown right here in Yell County.

The new roof on our Rover Baptist Church is really pretty. For the past few Saturdays as I passed my church, I would see several vehicles there which you would reason that several were working on the roof. But as you look at the roof, yu only see one or two guys.Where are the other people?Well, Bro. Shipley is probably telling the working guys a story. Others are shouting encouragement to the ones that are working and some ofthe ladies have brought food for the workers. So I'm not sure which guys did the work, but they did a good job.

My cousin, Billy Euel Highfill of Owasso,OK. drove to Gravelly, Thursday to help plan for our F.V. school reunion, which is the 9th of Sept.Loucinda, Charles and Rita Daniel,Dennus and June Castleberry,Larry and Shirley Aikman, and myself, had supper together. We had so much fun talking about the "good ole days".Billy has taken the format of Jeff Foxworthy,"You might be a Redneck if" and changed the sayings he has written to "You might be from F.V if." Loucinda is going to have them displayed on a poster board for the reunion so you can enjoy reading them.. Larry,Billy,Charles and Loucinda did a lot of planning after supper.Rita and Charles have just returned from Alaska where they spent 2 weeks with their granddaughter and her husband, who live on an island there in Alaska. The nearest town from the Island is Citka. The granddaughter teaches school there.Rita had wonderful pictures of the beauty of the island. Also she had pictures ofthe lovely 3 story home her granddaughter and husband are building on the island.

Friday, Billy Euel Loucinda, Charles and Rita,Larry and Shirley and myself met at the Nola store for lunch. After lunch we went to Gary and Sheila Garner's Pet Registrar business, outside of Gravelly.,on the Mulberry road.I had been there a couple of times but I always went from the Mulberry church. We were coming from Nola so we took the Scott Co. Road there just down from the cemetery.Loucinda says"Are you sure yu know where you are going.?"And I say,"Of course, my brother and I walked this road many a time when we were kids going to see our grandparents.."We travel awhile and we come to a fork in the road and Loucinda asks which road and I direct her. And guess what?--it was the wrong way!!Who could possibly get lost on the Mulberry Road?Glenna can!!Loucinda says"this is not right? cause there we were with no road left and we are in this man's front yard. I found outlater it was Mr. Garrett's house. What was bad was Rita and Charles were following us so here are two new Cadillacs pulling up in this man's yard and he is sitting on his tractor just watching us. Loucinda rolls down her car window and tells him she's looking for Gary Garner's Pet Registry. He proceeds to give her detailed instructions as how to get there and I say"Gosh Loucinda, I know how to get there." and she said"Well, it doesn't seem as if you do."So we go back and find Gary's business. I mean to tell you Gary and Sheila have quite an establishment,"The American Pet Registry,Inc." There are 22 employees and they are at work on those computers every minute registering dogs from all over the world. One of the things hat is great is that Gary has hired people from the Valley to work for him. Gary and one of his empoloyees printed our letters and programs and put addresses on the envelopes.Marcus Richmond, Sheila's and Gary's son in law, used a machine to fold the letters. We so appreciate Gary and Sheila taking all that time away from their busy afternoon to do that for our reunion It is Gary's 50th year since graduating from F.V. Then, after the letters were ready,Rita , Charles, Llucinda and I stuffed the envelopes anbd stamped them and got them ready to mail. Gary sure saved us a lot of work and we are thankful for him.It is amazing how much fun we have eating together and talkng and laughing and reliving our school years.

Mr. John Meredith has bought the Bea Neighbor's property at Gravelly. Of curse John and his wife bought, what I still call th Vess Herrin place in Gravelly and love their home, their fishing poond, etc, so they will not be moving. John told me perhaps a member of his family will live in the Neighbor's house.

When I went to Russellville, last week to hear the Rambler's band play, Orlan Ray Thomas shakes hands with O.L. Briggs and says,"O.L. you and Beatrice Garner Yeats are the oldest two up the valley now, aren't you?"O.L. said"I guess so, but Beatrice is just a tad older then me." I called Beatrice and told her what O.L said and Beatrice says,"O.L. can take his sign down ,now cause Velma Thompson is 4 years older than we are."

Katie Fickle, daughter of Roy and Robbie Fickle, has blockages in both legs. She is in continuous pain. Monday the 7th she will have a procedure done at Sparks Hospital in Ft. S,mith. I pray the doctors will find out what to do and that Katie will soon be well.

My dear friend of Wing Community Church, Louise Person, is leaving the 7th for Alabama. Her tests she had done last week showed she has lung cancer. So Louise will go to her daughter's, Annette's home in Alabama.
